Cyclists save man after heart attack Kate Russell Members from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade happened to be “in the right place at the right time” on Saturday, saving the life of a cyclist who suffered a heart attack during a bike race near Picton. The 46 year old Christchurch man was competing in the Forrest GrapeRide cycling event with his teenage son, when he went into cardiac arrest. But by a stroke of luck, fireman Jeremy Talbot, and Tracey Parkes and Phillip

Reardon from St John, came across him and acted immediately. Jeremy says he was biking up the hill looking out for his wife, when he spotted her talking on the phone. “It turns out she was actually calling an ambulance,” he says. “When we got to him, we jumped in and started doing compressions and then the ambulance turned up three of four minutes after that. It couldn’t have been any better,” he says. “We had only just had CPR

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne under another sunny Richmond day. NIWA stats released last week show Richmond to be the country’s sunniest place. Photo: Andrew Board.

Richmond is NZ’s sunniest place

Richmond is the country’s sunniest place so far in 2016, beating its closest rival by 50 hours, according to data released by NIWA last week. Richmond leads the standings of the regularly reporting sunshine observation sites with 856 sun hours from January 1 to March 31. Next best is New Plymouth on 806, Appleby on 801, Blenheim on 764 and Takaka on 736. Nelson Airport also recorded 736

hours of sun and Whakatane is down to 675 hours. NIWA’s principal scientist and forecaster, Chris Brandolino, says the observation site at the Richmond Racecourse is new and is showing the town to be the country’s sunniest place. “It was installed in April last year and while Richmond is showing to be a sunny place I would say [the race for the sun title] is a marathon,

not a sprint.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says Richmond is booming and it’s “not surprising when we look at the weather”. “Richmond is just such a great place to be, it’s got a really nice natural environment and, as a result, we have huge growth with housing and infrastructure. That’s a challenge for the council, but it’s a good place to be.”

“It’s an excellent idea. People need to realise that smoking can’t be tolerated anymore, even outside.”

“I agree, having been an exsmoker and now reformed. The more smoke-free areas the better.”

“Yeah, I agree, it’s for a healthier environment. People don’t want to be around secondhand smoke.”

“The time is right for it. People’s attitudes towards smoking have changed in the last couple of years.”

Queen St plan approved

Waimea Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Richmond’s Queen St is set to become a low-speed, pedestrian-focused environment. Construction is due to begin in August this year to replace ageing pipe infrastructure under Queen St and to lower the centre of the road. The street’s surface will be replaced from shop front to shop front as part of the work, which is needed to minimise the risk of flooding in future during heavy rain. The Tasman District Council has agreed to a concept design for the reinstated street that includes wider footpaths and a

the street – which contributes to slower traffic speeds as well. Wider footpaths provide a clear line of travel and also offer an opportunity for outdoor dining, trees for shade, and spaces for people to meet and mingle. “Because we will be lowering the centre of the road to divert water away from shops and businesses during heavy rain, putting the street back exactly as it is now is not actually an option,” says Richard. The next step in the project is detailed design, which will include elements such as lighting, seating, plantings and signage.

More than 1000 competitors took part in the annual Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy on Sunday. There they were greeted with a 2km long course of mud that had many wading, crawling and stumbling to the finish line. Race options included 1, 2 or 3 laps, with an obstacle course to navigate at both the start and the end. “It went superbly, we were quietly surprised [at the numbers], given that the event was much later than it would normally run, but obviously the

weather was in our favour and I think we just struck it right, so we were really pleased with how it went,” says Angela Mangnall of the event’s organising committee. Around 1050 people took part in this year’s event, a great improvement on numbers from last year, and together they managed to raise $15,000 for Tasman School. The organising committee say they would like to thank parents of the school for all their hard work making the day a success, as well as the event’s sponsors and everyone who participated.

Protection from the common cold The common cold is not the same as the flu. The common cold is contagious and difficult to avoid. Act early to boost your body’s resistance to viral infections. Get plenty of sleep, avoid getting run down, maintain a balanced diet, exercise and keep hydrated. Support your immune system by taking multi- vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, garlic... The list goes on and knowing which supplement is best for you can be confusing. Come and talk to us and we can choose the most suitable option for you. Buccaline is a very good preventative for the complications of the common cold. I recommend you consider a course now, and a follow up course in three months to get you through the winter.

Hospital says sorry to young mother Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A young, first-time Nelson mum says she is “absolutely shocked” after a nurse told her to cover up while breastfeeding her six-week old son in a Nelson Hospital ward. Nicole Marr, 21, was at the hospital all day visiting her husband, Shannon, who had his appendix out just over a week ago. She says she was sitting down next to his bed, breastfeeding her son Louie, when a nurse came over and told her she needed to close the partition curtain. “She said that she wasn’t offended, but the doctors, other staff and patients might be,” says Nicole. “She went on for at least a minute and was quite nasty - I didn’t know what to say. Then she just pulled the curtain on me. “As a new mum, it’s so hard. I feel like it’s my right to

portive,” in regards to her breastfeeding there. “Five minutes later a surgeon went and got me an arm chair so I was more comfy – so obviously this one nurse did find it offensive.”

Nicole has also expressed her frustration on Facebook, saying: “I am absolutely shocked that the first person to have a negative view about my breast-feeding was a hospital nurse. “So much for nurses being an advocate for what’s best for humans.” Nicole has lodged an official complaint with the hospital and has been informed that she will receive a written apology in the mail. She was also told that the nurse would be “talked to”. A spokesperson from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has confirmed that they have received Nicole’s complaint and are handling it as per their complaints process. They also say that, while they cannot discuss the details of the complaint due to privacy reasons, they “want to reassure people that we unequivocally support breast-feeding across our organisation”.

New fund created to help local events Kate Russell Tasman District Council has approved a $50,000 special grants fund, which is designed to support large events and projects within the district. The fund was proposed during the development of the long term plan last May, and will enable council to better respond to funding requests over $10,000 that arise during the year. Sharon Flood, strategic policy manager stresses that the fund is not just for events, but for anything the community needs over $5000. She also says the fund will be significant to many organisations, providing a pool of funding that is not currently available. Funding requests will be considered and approved at special community grants subcommittee meetings, which are held three times a year, but in special cases meetings may be arranged to assess applications on a one-off basis.

Mayor Richard Kempthorne says he supports the fund, but it would be dependent on council having a cash surplus at the end of the financial year. “I think it’s helpful to have it there, because we do have the occasional significant request for funding that has nowhere to go, and it gives us the option to help with those bigger events,” he says. Grape harvest challenging time for wine industry Simon Bloomberg Nelson wineries are fighting a battle against botrytis as they race to get their grapes harvested after last month's heavy rain "created havoc" in some of the region's vineyards. The grape harvest started around the Nelson-Tasman region late last month after a growing season that included late frosts, hail, disease and two significant rain events. Although growers managed to get through the early season challenges relatively unscathed, last month's downpour

A bunch of pinot gris grapes infected by botrytis.

has resulted in outbreaks of botrytis which causes the grapes to rot and lower the quality of the fruit. "Some of the fruit is looking very good and some is looking bad," Rimu Grove's Patrick Stowe says. "The latest rain we had has created havoc because of the botrytis - it was too much rain at exactly the wrong time." However, Patrick says Rimu Grove are fortunate because they always hand-pick their grapes, allowing the bunches infected with botrytis to be cut out. "We have a good crew of pickers and we can be selective. The good fruit has fantastic flavours so we should have some very good wine this year." Nelson Winegrowers Association chairman Jonny Hiscox concedes "it's been a hell of a growing season" with the weather throwing everything at growers. He says vineyards have also had to contend with a new strain of powdery mildew, and now the rain has created a perfect environment for botrytis and impacted on sugar levels. "The fruit was in good condition but the rain diluted the brix and now we have to play a waiting game, which prolongs the agony," he says. Jonny, who manages Whenua

Grape pickers, from left, Erik Supcik, Nick Pospischil and Kjell Brennecke, at Rimu Grove Winery. Photo: Simon Bloomberg Matua Vineyard in Upper Moutere, says botrytis could become an even bigger problem following further rain over the last week. "The bigger vineyards that machine harvest will have to go through and remove the affected fruit by hand, which takes time and is another unbudgeted cost.

It's been a challenging season so let's hope we get some very good wines at the end of it." Waimea Estate manager Ben Bolitho says they "have been pretty lucky so far" and haven't any problems with botrytis. However, Ben says he is aware that it is an issue for many vineyards around

Nelson and that will impact on the quality and yield of fruit. Ben says they have harvested some rose, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and gewurtztraminer, and the quality of the fruit is excellent. The grape harvest is expected to be completed in another month.

Velma’s ten kids make it home for 90th birthday Brittany Spencer Velma Oliver’s ten children may be scattered across the world, but every one of them made it home for her 90th birthday. On Sunday, the born and bred local celebrated her nine decades at Mapua’s Boat Club with every one of her children and as many friends and family members as she could pack in. With most spread about the country and some over the ditch, coordinating even the immediate family is no mean feat. While the oldest and youngest, Marilyn Tunnicliff and Tania McBride still live in Hope, Val’s youngest son Grant travelled from Queensland to be with her and Val’s grandson Jeremy Taylor flew back from Los Angeles. “They’re all scattered, I’ve got some in Nelson, some in Christchurch, some in Auckland, some in Whanganui, some in Australia and all round,” says Val. “I am a very lucky lady, it’s wonderful to see them all together. “We invited friends, family and acquaintances, as many as I could fit, it’s the one time that I could say it would be really wonderful to have them all together.” Val’s fourth child, Charmaine

Taylor, says it’s very rare for the family to all be in the same place at the same time. “It’s a bit of a mission, we’ve been planning this for months so it’s great everyone can be together.” To most, she is known simply as Val, but to her five sons and five daughters she is “supermum”. “She would always make the best out of everything and she was amazing at managing money and food and us kids,” says Charmaine. “Nothing fazed her, it didn’t matter what we did. She never used bad language, except one time when the boys threw one of her pots outside and started using it as a battering ram for some game. I’ll never forget it, she was out on the doorstep hammering it back into shape and she said, ‘those bloody boys, that’s the last time they’re getting a pot of mine to play with’. That was the one and only time I’ve ever heard her swear.” Val’s youngest, Tania McBride, says she loved growing up with nine older siblings. “There was always someone to play with, but I grew up with three older brothers directly above me so there was a lot of rough and tumble. I still feel like the baby even though I’m old now.”

From left to right, Top row: Mike, Tony and Grant Lovell, Charmain Taylor, David and Roger Lovell. Bottom row: Rosemary Lovell, Marilyn Tunnicliff, Val Oliver, Tania McBride and Jenny Marchbanks. Photo: Brittany Spencer. The youngest of eleven herself, Val always knew she wanted a large family. “I always wanted my young ones to be like I was, one of many. It can be chaos but it’s fun, and you’re always there for each other.” Val grew up on a 12 acre property on Ranzau Rd, the same one she raised her children in and the same house that Tania lives in

now. “Ranzau was just a gravel road back then with no lighting and very few houses. I remember the dear old lady next door walking her cow up and down the entire road so it could feed on the grass. “We used to jump across the frosty paddocks in the morning to get to school and Hope School only had two rooms back then, one for the little ones and

one for the older ones. It was the same when my kids began to go to Ranzau School, things have definitely changed in the district. “Everyone knew each other and my brother used to host big barn dances over the road. We had lots and lots of fun because there were always loads of people around and I think that’s what I’ve loved best about my life, to have so many friends and family.”

Great numbers to Positive Ageing Expo Jessie Johnston Hundreds of people, keen to learn more about making the most of their retirement, turned out for the annual Positive Ageing Expo on Friday. The event, which was held at Headingly Centre in Richmond, showcased information, products, services and community groups that can help older people stay active, social and healthy. After an introduction by Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, the public had the opportunity to browse over 70 stalls including companion driving services, St John, funeral services, mobility solutions, Nelson Grey Power and community groups such as Menzshed. The expo also offered three different seminars, one focusing on being online savvy in order to help older people avoid falling victim to online scams, the other looked at making the most of health services, including what questions to ask and how to receive the information in a way that can be understood,

while the third focused on keeping homes warm, healthy and comfortable by maximising their existing resources. “It’s been fantastic, a good range of stalls and a huge number turning up again which is great, we were a bit worried that the weather might have a dampening effect, but it’s been great,” says Mike TasmanJones, community partnership coordinator at Tasman District Council. “I think [it’s popular] because under one roof and on one day people can find a whole range of different information, they can talk to the service groups and community groups involved, they can find out how they can get involved or how the service can help them.” Anna Cole from Stoke was amongst those exploring what the expo had to offer and says she was impressed with the variety of stalls the expo incorporated. “I’m in that age group of over-65, and other years I was still working so I wasn’t able to come, [but this year] I wanted to see what’s available locally.”

Gala raises $20k for St Paul’s new hall Brittany Spencer St Paul’s School is well on their way to a new multi-function centre following the huge success of Saturday’s Harvest Gala. Hundreds of people turned up in their rain jackets and gummies to support the school and enjoy the entertainment, food, games, haunted house, silent auction and tutorials from Celebrity Masterchef Richard Harris. Organiser Heather Lackner says the community really came together and got behind the school. “We had huge support from the parents, the kids got really excited and involved, and the community donated a massive amount of things,” she says. “I think the haunted house was one of the biggest successes, we had people coming out crying because they were so frightened.” Board of Trustees chair Adrianne Hill says the gala raised over $20,000. “That’s huge, because we’re only a small school with 110 families so to pull that all together, get it done and make that much profit is amazing.” The money raised at the gala will go towards building a multi-function centre for the school. At the moment the school doesn’t have a hall, and Adrianne says they can only get the school together for ten minutes each Monday morning. “At the moment, we have a role of around 220 and we sort of cram all the children into our music room. But the children really are almost sitting on top of each other, it’s such a tight fit. “It’s really so that the whole school has somewhere to gather together, for shared prayer, for liturgy, for music, but it would be attached to

Awesome... wish we could all do that. Vivienne Garrick. Be interested to know if there is a sterilization process involved here. Is it up to the customer to wash the glass bottles that are returned?, the milkman?, the farm? Previously with glass bottles, they were put through sterilization by the milk company to meet health standards before reuse. However, the bottle wash was massively power-consuming and had nasty environmental effects with the waste produced, hence the move to plastic. Is this a health and environmental risk? Adrian Burt. Well done, Trevor. We always get our milk delivered so looking forward to the change. Helen Gowland. Builder wanted: Great to see an apprenticeship available, shouldn't have any problems getting someone to take this on, they will probably be swamped with applicants. Brenda Kenny. Trafalgar Centre open again: A design revolution - a wall made of coloured tarps. Ya have to hand it to the NCC. Jim Mitchell. Yep, a monstrosity of a building, stop wasting good money on this and build something decent! When is this decrepid, backward, hillbilly council going to get the balls to join the real world and do a decent job instead of the 'she'll be alright, bodge it brigade. Only in Nelson. Brian Gower. Food needed for charity: As a citizen of Nelson, I wish to acknowledge the members of our community who give their time and support to help others. Putting others needs before their own and reaching deep into the hearts of humanity. Through their generosity, patience, love and kindness, another man, woman and child is kept warm, safe and fed. To all those people, organisa-

I have taken time out to have lunch with other locals who are going through tough times, and let me say I am and will always be, truly grateful for the opportunity. The people at Loaves and Fishes not only prepare lunches and serve them, but also provide a warm, caring atmosphere and a listening ear, catering for all ages and needs on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at lunchtime. I noticed that they are in need of your generosity. Any and all food goods would be greatly appreciated. I appeal to your community spirit to help your own citizens become productive members of society by just knowing others care. If you can help in any way please contact All Saints Anglican Church on 548 2601. Tina Baker. Queen St upgrade approved: What’s wrong with this council? Don’t they realize there’s more and more vehicles and people around and there’s just getting less parks and less room. They should be thinking about wider roads and more carparks. Mike Roberts. With ratepayers money from the greater Tasman district, when this council will not even build a toilet block for freedom campers anywhere in Golden Bay. Dale Boyce. Unfortunately, this just pushes unwanted cars into the back streets causing congestion there, as these roads are not designed to withstand the increased level of traffic. We struck this road/ footpath design when travelling in Holland. It makes it hard work for parents of children, sight and hearing impaired. There is no easy way to identify between road and footpath. Some ideas look great on paper but are extremely impractical when implemented into real life. Julia Egan. Sounds like the “shared space” idea being foisted on us over here. With quieter vehicles, how are pedestrians supposed to know there’s a vehicle around? And what about anyone with impaired hearing? or vision? or children? The idea that drivers will weave their way around pedestrians is a joke - but not to the pedestrians who have already been injured in these spaces. Rant over. Jane Mulholland. Four hundred warriors to do obstacle race

13

Wairua Warrior Obstacle Race organiser Greg Witika and Smiths Sport Shoes owner Ryan Stewart. Photo: Andrew Board.

Andrew Board Composure will be the key to this year’s Wairua Warrior Obstacle Race, says its organiser, but that’s easier said than done. More than 400 people have already registered for this year’s event, which will see competitors race either 6km or 12km across the muddy Happy Valley course. Along the way, competitors will encounter various obstacles which need to be completed, or a punishment of burpees awaits. Obstacles range from rope climbs to barbed wire crawling to sand bag carries, climbing walls and tyre drags. Organiser Greg Witika says all of the obstacles “doable” but the key for competitors will be to keep it simple. “The most difficult obstacles are the ones that don’t require a lot of energy, they require just a little bit of composure. But when you’re going through obstacle after obstacle, composure is kind of out the window. So those who can compose themselves will do well.” The Wairua Warrior is in its second year, almost doubling the number of entrants from last year. Greg says these kinds of events are gaining in popularity around the world and he expects the same here in Nelson. “It’s definitely an event that could cater for up to 1000 and that’s what we want to aim for. So we’re happy to have 400 participants within two years.” The race sees people enter in a team or as individuals before heading off on the course. Thirty-six marshals are stationed around the course to ensure competitors get help, if they need it, and to provide some encouragement. Greg says the atmosphere of the event is all about fun and competitors help each out along the way. But before the “open wave” of the race starts, the “elite wave” will get a crack at the course. The elite wave has attracted around 30 of the sport’s top competitors from around the country and even some from Australia. Greg says he sees the elite section as a growth area. “What we want to do is separate those who are really competitive and don’t want to get stuck amongst the masses of people and really want to challenge themselves. We want to really lift the awareness of elite wave and try to attract the trail runners, marathon runners and those kinds of athletes to the sport.” The first man and woman home in the elite wave will win a $500 voucher from Smiths Sport Shoes. The Wairua Warrior is on this Saturday, April 9, at Happy Valley from 7.30am. Competitors can register on the day but won’t receive a race t-shirt. For more information see wairuawarrior.co.nz

BREWERY KITCHEN & BAR 660 Main Rd, Stoke | Ph 547 5357 New Management

After four months under new management, McCashin's Brewery Kitchen and Bar is almost unrecognisable when you step inside. Lincoln and Brigitta Womersley, who also own and operate BLINC Catering, began their new venture with a hiss and a roar late last year, and after a successful summer season have finally come up for air. The iconic McCashin's operation is now split into two, with the McCashin family continuing to craft their beer in the brewery, while Lincoln and Brigitta are all about serving up delicious food. “We thought it would be a really cool challenge, an excellent opportunity and another great business and family to work

with,” says Lincoln, on their decision to take over the kitchen. Lincoln and Brigitta both believe that McCashin's STOKE Beer and Rochdale Cider are excellent products and the chance to pair them with food was something they couldn’t pass up. “That’s where we want to go with this,” says Lincoln, “people are drinking the beer with some really good food and it becomes a memory.” As well as working the kitchen and front-of-house at McCashin's Brewery Kitchen and Bar, Lincoln and Brigitta are also kept busy with BLINC Catering, which is possible thanks to the reliable McCashin's Kitchen and Bar team. "Because we are attached to the brewery and get the products straight from the source with no middle man, we are able to pass the savings on to the customers at great everyday prices" says Lincoln. While Lincoln is still very much involved on the tools, the head chef Jody Keefe-Laing has full control in the kitchen, including the design of their new menu. “We’ve got a really great head chef who is on the ball, and we’re trying to make everything hand-crafted, right down to the tomato sauce and burger buns,” says Lincoln. Jody previously spent nine years working at Hopgood's and is looking forward to the challenge of managing his own kitchen. Already his new menu has hit the spot with diners, including weekly breakfast specials for Saturday and Sunday mornings, and a dinner menu featuring Braised Lamb Pie with Mushy Peas, Mash and a Jus using Stoke Dark, a twist on the traditional Steak, Eggs and Chips and Aoraki Alpine Salmon with Potato Salad and Cress. Thanks to Jody’s extensive culinary skills, diners will enjoy rustic, pub-style dishes, with an added refining touch, enhanced by an accompanying STOKE Beer or Rochdale Cider. During the day there is plenty in the cabinet or on the lunch menu, including Harissa Spiced Lamb Sandwiches, Roast Beef Sandwiches, Hot Smoked Salmon

Partnering with McCashin’s Brewery

One of the main drawcards for taking on McCashin’s Kitchen and Bar was the support offered by partnering with the McCashin family, and Lincoln and Brigitta are proud to be working alongside such an iconic Nelson business. “We have a unique partnership with McCashin’s Brewery in that even though we are two separate businesses, we all work hard to support each other,” says Lincoln. The hospitality side, which Brigitta and Lincoln manage, includes the regular brewery tours on offer twice daily from Monday to Friday, one starting at 11am and the second at 2pm. Bookings are essential for the tour which runs for around 30-40 minutes, followed by a tasting of everything on tap, which includes five STOKE Beers and one ROCHDALE Three Berry Cider. The tour guide talks people through the unique flavour characteristics of each STOKE Beer, the background behind the beers, the McCashin family’s history and revolution of the brewing industry in New Zealand. Tours can be booked by calling 547 0329.

New look for McCashin’s

The partnership also flowed through to the refit, with the design being a collaborative effort with the brewery. “We wanted to make it a little bit more contemporary and wanted to compliment the fact we are in amongst a brewery - a working

operation, hence the viewing windows so people can see through to the bottling area,” says Lincoln. “There is a fair bit of noise that goes with it, but instead of trying to pretend that it’s not there we want people to feel as if they’re part of it. They can see the bottling, the fork lifts, the pallets of beer and the trucks coming in to pick up the orders to go overseas.” The new business has not just seen a redecoration, a two month remodel has created a completely new layout for the café/restaurant and both businesses can’t wait for The new look McCashin’s Brewery Kitchen and Bar people to come and enjoy it. Cyclist hit by car door: I could have been killed Andrew Board

A Tahunanui man knocked off his bike a fortnight ago is urging drivers to take extra care when opening their car doors. Barry Taylor was cycling along Rocks Rd, near the Boathouse, when the driver’s door of a parked car was opened right in front of him. The impact sent him flying in the air before crashing to the ground and leaving the 55 year old with a fractured vertebra, ribs and pelvis. After spending a week in hospital he is now back at his home on Blackwood St – which is right next door to the home of Bill Higgins, who was killed when he was knocked off his bike on Tahunanui Drive last November. Barry says that he thought of Bill after the crash. “I thought ‘jeez, it could have been another one of us’. It certainly crossed my mind.” He says the impact of the acci-

Someone said they called the ambulance and when they arrived they bundled me on board with multiple screams and flash language.”

In hospital, the doctors told him they had to wait for the pain to ease before they could do scans, so Barry was taken to a ward and made as comfortable as possible. He says it was agony. “It felt like my leg had been ripped out, it was excruciating. They gave me morphine and

other pain-killers but the pain was so bad.” Barry was in hospital for eight days and now faces a three month recovery. He is a beneficiary, but does volunteer at the Koha Shed and is the area coordinator for the pink ribbon street appeal. He says he usually looks through the rear windows of parked cars when he is cycling to make sure no one is in the driver’s seat who could open the door. But this car had tinted windows and luggage in the back that he couldn’t see through. “It could have been worse, I could have been killed. But I’m trying to stay positive,” he says. Police are following up with the man who opened the car door, he identified himself as “Steve” to nelsonlive.co.nz, which first reported the story. To cap off a crummy week for Barry, his beloved dog was put down after it was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Apprentice builders make playhouses for kids Nelson apprentices competing in this year’s Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge this Friday at NMIT will be building children’s playhouses to be donated to local early childcare providers. Certified Builders Nelson is inviting all local play-centres, kindergartens, crèches and other early childcare providers to get in touch by contacting Nick Matthews (nick@certified. co.nz) if they are interested in a playhouse. The playhouses are designed specifically for children of preschool age, built low to the ground, wide and stable, and measuring approximately 1.8 metres in height. The set-up includes a small climbing wall, stepladder and low swing. They will be constructed of durable, long-lasting trade-quality construction timber and materials, and built with pre-schoolers in mind (no sharp edges and nails punched flush below the surface). The playhouses will be donated in their natural timber state so that early childcare providers can use them as is or paint them as they choose to add their own personal touch.

Public information sessions for the Southern Link Investigation kicked off in Nelson last week, resulting in good turnouts but mixed views from local residents. Nelson Weekly attended meetings at Stoke Hall on Friday and Elma Turner Library on Saturday, which both attracted over 40 people. The drop-in style sessions allowed people to engage with representatives from NZTA, to gain a better understanding of the three proposed approaches to improve congestion and accessibility on Nelson’s arterial routes between the Annesbrook Drive and Haven Road roundabouts. The three approaches are: to improve the existing road network, widening the existing arterial routes, or building a new route. Public feedback from the sessions will be used to help NZTA further develop the Programme Business Case for the project. At the sessions, some locals said they were pleased to see the number of different approaches, with one young resident saying it would “take the heat out of it”. “It’s good to see that it’s not the Southern Link or nothing,” he said. Some were indecisive, and had come along to gather information and “get their heads around the options”. Others came to the sessions to

confirm their view that the Southern Link is the best option for Nelson. Stuart Walker, who is a member of the Nelson Residents Association and is also running for council this year, voiced his opinion that Nelson needs the link. “I sit in traffic and think, why is this happening? There has to be a better way,” he said. Another Nelson resident who was involved with the construction of the original motorway confirmed he was “totally behind it” and the link is a “very practical situation”. But, there were also those who came to say that Nelson simply doesn’t need a new road. Peter Olorenshaw, from antiSouthern Link lobby group Nelsust was at Friday’s session in Stoke, and said that Nelson has “much bigger questions to look at”. “Traffic volumes are not increasing, and even if the Southern Link is built, Rocks Rd is still going to be busy,” he said. Malcolm Saunders, an ex-councillor from the 1970s said improvements to the existing arterial routes, such as an overbridge or underpass on Waimea Rd by Nelson College, should be looked at instead. There is still one public information session left, this Saturday, April 9, at Richmond Library from 10am – 1pm. You can also fill out an online feedback form and find out more about the project at www.nzta.govt. nz/nelson-southern-link. Feedback is due by April 24.

The Giants celebrated the reopening of their beloved “hangar” in perfect style on Saturday night. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants first home game of the National Basketball League also doubled as the reopening of the region’s largest civic building, the Trafalgar Centre. It closed in December 2013 after it was deemed a risk to those inside in the event of a major earthquake. Debate has raged since over the decision, but last year the council decided to strengthen the parts of the building and rebuild the aging entrance area that included the Victory room, kitchen and toilet block. The $12.9 million upgrade still has months to go, but

enough has been done to allow the Giants back into the stadium they’ve played at since the 1980s. It was close to a sell-out and those who were there didn’t leave disappointed, with the Giants holding onto a slender 88-86 lead to claim their fifth win of the season, over the Taranaki Mountain Airs. The win leaves the Giants top of the table. One of the Giants best on the night, Finn Delany, says it was great to be back. “Mentally, it’s a big boost for the team and the club to get back to Trafalgar, it’s where all the history is and all the memories, so it’s awesome for us to be back.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reece says she’s proud of all those who worked on opening the stadium in time for the Giants.

Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. “I couldn’t have picked a better event to get the stadium open for, to welcome our Giants home is just brilliant.” Before tip off, Giants legend Phill Jones was handed a bunch of flowers from his oldest fan, 96 year-ol

Doris Cuthbert, for reaching 7000 league points the week before. It is thought to be a league record. Nelson Weekly reported on Phill and Doris’s two decade relationship as player and fan last month, when the Giants gave Doris and her daughter

season tickets. Mike Pero Nelson Giants are back at the hangar again this Saturday night when they host the Hawkes Bay Hawks. The game tips off at 7pm, tickets are available from Call a Geek, Jack Robins Stadium in Stoke and Richmond Mall.

Football referee hangs up his whistle Andrew Board For almost 40 straight winters Ian Hull has spent his weekends either refereeing football matches around Nelson, or assessing those who do. That run will come to an end this year, with his decision to swap a Nelson winter for a summer in Canada and Europe. But his dedication to the sport earned him a surprise life membership of Nelson Bays Football, last week. Ian began refereeing when he was roped in at the last minute to replace a friend who went down injured. “I arrived here [from the UK] in 1970 and got involved with Nelson City junior football and then started coaching rep teams. But I got involved with this guy Dennis who was a referee and I used to run the line for him. Then one day he rang me up just a little while before kick-off and said ‘look Ian, I can’t do the game today, I’m Ian Hull was made a injured. Can you do life member of Nelson the game?’ That’s Bays Football last week how it started.” after almost 40 years And it continued as a referee and referee for 38 straight win- development officer. ters. Photo: Andrew Board. Ian says he quickly got his local refereeing badge before working towards his New Zealand badge. He refereed National League games in Nelson and Chatham Cup games. He admits that refereeing isn’t for everyone, but it was something he relished. “You can never force someone into refereeing. You can twist their arm to play a game because they’re in a team, but you can’t force someone to stand by themselves in the middle of the field. For me it was just one of those things, you have to have a hobby or something, and it just fell into place. I just carried on through the ranks.” He says there were times when players crossed the line, but it was a rarity. “There has only ever been one player who I genuinely felt crossed the line on a regular basis, we didn’t get on. I think it's white line fever. Talk to a guy outside the field of play and he’s the nicest guy, cross that field of play and he changes. But most players realise that referees are doing it on a voluntary basis.” More recently, Ian has stepped off the pitch in his role as referee development officer for Nelson Bays Football. It was a role he enjoyed. “I thoroughly enjoyed the referee development role. My only regret is not geting more young referees into it. It’s probably been the only letdown.” Ian’s involvement in football isn’t over though. He’s already been asked about helping with the national league games when the competition returns to Nelson this summer. Peter Cobbledick has replaced Ian as referee development officer.

WOMEN'S TRIATHLON: Yvonne Shaw of Nelson, and Margaret Oliver of Richmond, begin the McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon on Sunday. The triathlon, which started at Maitai Valley, was in its 29th edition and saw close to 200 participants, including four teams, run 5km or walk 3km, and cycle 13 km before swimming four lengths of Riverside Pool. The triathlon was started in order to get women competing in a more welcoming environment and it’s an event that anyone can take part in, with runners and walkers ranging from over 70 to intermediate and college age. Amanda Ewings and Claudia Lee say they decided to take part to get a little fitter and this seemed like the perfect first triathlon to compete in. They also say they will be back to try and beat their time. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Wanderers inflict hiding on Waimea Andrew Board

Wanderers supporters at Jubilee Park on Saturday afternoon were in rugby heaven. Their senior rugby team inflicted surely one of the biggest ever defeats on its arch-rival Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys. If you’re a Waimea fan, you may not want to read any further. If you’re a Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers fan, grab a seat and enjoy. From the opening whistle Wanderers looked too big, too fast and too strong for a young and developing Waimea team. By half time they had racked up 50 points and, after a brief spell of dominance from Waimea at the start of the second half, Wanderers got back to work. Waimea’s cover defence was called on time and time again as Wanderers outside backs made huge inroads, lead by fullback Jesse Pitman. Wanderers scrum and line out were superior and tries were scored from length-of-thefield runs to pick-and-gos at the line. Waimea fans shouldn’t be too despondent though, this is a

team suffering because of its own success. If James Lowe, Billy Guyton, Jeff Lepa, Pete Samu, Tevita Cavubati, Marty Banks and Sam Prattley were not all playing Super Rugby you could guarantee a much different result. With that exodus of players, Waimea are having to start again, hoping to develop their next wave of stars. Waimea co-coach Mark Milne says his side’s attitude was the most disappointing aspect of the game for him. “We were pretty disappointed, we pride ourselves as a young team having a good attitude and we felt that slipped on Saturday, but we might put that down to being overawed.” He says they need to learn from the loss or there will be plenty more of them. “But I’m confident we can, I really am. I’m still pretty chipper. No team likes to lose by that many points but you have be realistic and that’s probably a true reflection of where the two sides are at the moment. We’re readjusting as a team and a club and we’re going through a readjustment period, but conceding that many isn’t much fun.” Waimea will travel to play Kahurangi this Saturday in Motueka. Kahurangi last week beat Nelson 28-13. For Wanderers, the win leaves them top of the Tasman Trophy table after three wins from as many games. This Saturday they play Stoke at Greenmeadows. Both these Tasman Trophy games kick off at 3pm. In the curtain-raiser on Saturday, Waimea’s Car Company Nelson Bays division two team beat Wanderers 14-10 in a tight match.

Your local award winning building company Introducing Ian Armstrong “I am really excited to join the Stonewood Homes sales team and I look forward to meeting and helping as many people as I can into their new homes. My extensive background in both sales roles and senior management in the Timber Industry for 30 years has given me a very good understanding of construction techniques, building materials and the processes associated with building a new house. As well as this career experience I have also personally project managed and built houses for myself on sections with varied land challenges. I understand the need to keep to a budget and that no new house owner likes budget blowouts or unexpected costs. As my customer my aim would be to make the building process an exciting and stress free one where you can voice your ideas and wishes freely for the house that you want. Quality is our aim and no house is too big or small. We also have a selected group of experts to help with decision making in key areas like interior and kitchen design should you require it. I look forward to meeting you all and helping you in any way that I can.” Ian
